Mr. Alex Hu stands as a distinguished figure in the field of structural engineering, bringing a wealth of experience and technical excellence accumulated over 25 years of dedicated service in the international structural engineering industry. As a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), he is recognized as one of the most influential professionals who have made significant and sustained contributions to the engineering profession at both national and international levels. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) in the UK, and of both the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of ASCE, consistently demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field.

Alex specializes in the structural design of a wide spectrum of building types, showcasing his versatility in handling everything from super-tall structures to long-span constructions. His expertise lies in complex structural analysis and design, structural system optimization, and seismic design, including Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD) for both concrete and steel buildings. Currently, he holds leadership roles as the Head of the Structural Engineering Practice at Gold Land Architects and Engineers (GLAE) and as the Managing Principal of GLAE, overseeing the firm’s overall business operations.

Licensed to practice civil and structural engineering in multiple countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and China, Alex’s impact extends globally. His design work encompasses significant, world-class building structures, contributing to the skylines of numerous cities. Beyond his design contributions, he plays an active role in shaping industry standards, serving on various national and international codes and standards committees.

Alex’s involvement in standards development includes serving as a Technical Committee Member for CSA S16: Design of Steel Structures; a Technical Committee Member of Issue Team 6 of the Provisions Update Committee (PUC) for the 2026 NEHRP Provisions; a Main Committee Member and member of the Seismic Subcommittee for the 2028 cycle of ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures; and a Standards Committee Member and Vice-Chair of the Seismic Subcommittee for ASCE 90, Standard for Design of Foundations, in the United States. His contributions also extend to China, where he serves as a National Code Committee Member for GB 50191, Code for Seismic Design of Special Structures.

Active in professional organizations, Alex serves as a Council Member of IStructE in the UK and previously served as Chair of its Ontario Regional Group (2020–2024) in Canada. He is also a panel expert on the IStructE Seismic and Dynamic Events Panel. In addition, he contributes to the development of future engineers as a Marking Examiner for the IStructE Chartered Membership Examination since 2018. In 2024, he was elected the first-ever ASCE Governor for the Central Canada Section, representing Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Nunavut. This pioneering role has broadened Canadian representation within ASCE, strengthened cross-border collaboration, and advanced the globalization of the profession.

Outside his engineering practice, Alex dedicates his time to authoring and editing major international technical publications, reflecting his commitment to knowledge dissemination. Notably, he serves as the Editor-in-Chief and one of the primary authors of the Springer handbook Seismic Design for Reinforced Concrete and Steel Building Structures, and is the author of the Springer engineering book Seismic and Wind Design for Tall and Complex Building Structures. Through his multifaceted contributions, Alex Hu continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of structural engineering on a global scale.
